Julia Hartley-Brewer shames Labour Remainer: 'Ardent Brexiteer is NOT an insult'

JULIA HARTLEY-BREWER burst out in laughter when Labour MP Jack Dromey failed miserably to attack her as an “ardent Brexiteer”, which she proudly said was “not an insult”.

Julia Hartley-Brewer could hardly keep a straight face as she laughed through Labour MP Jack Dromey’s attempt at disparaging her. In an interview, the Shadow Pensions Minister struggled massively to pin anything on the TalkRadio host. He grumbled: “There was a time when you were more balanced in your outlook.”

At this comment, the radio presenter burst into laughter, and joked: “When? When I agreed with you?”

The MP for Birmingham Erdington then called her “an ardent Brexiteer”.

Mrs Hartley-Brewer immediately shot back: “That’s not an insult by the way.

“You do know that being an ardent Brexiteer isn’t actually an insult.”

The two were discussing the resignation of Speaker of the House, John Bercow.

Mr Bercow announced his intention to stand down at the end of parliamentary proceedings on October 31.

He has been in the position of Speaker of the House since 2009.

However, his departure is marred by historical accusations of bullying by former and current House of Commons staff.

Mr Bercow has denied all allegations.

Mrs Hartley-Brewer pushed Mr Dromey on whether he still commended the Speaker despite the accusations.

He said: “You're asking me about the man as a Speaker holding governments to account. He has done that admirably.”

The TalkRadio interviewer replied swiftly: “So as long as he holds the government to account, that’s fine?

“You’re quite happy to praise a man as a ‘decent guy’, ‘one of the finest speakers ever’ who has those kind of accusations against him?"

The Labour MP refused to answer the question and tried to criticise his host: “You can try all you want to take a different view, the view of Boris Johnson.”

Bemused, Mrs Hartley-Brewer replied: “It’s not the view of Boris Johnson, it’s the view of a lot of MPs in the House of Commons on many different sides.

“Bercow’s been very useful to you so you’re willing to let it go.”
