Royal misery: How Prince Andrew moaned about 'lonely' life without Sarah Ferguson

PRINCE ANDREW complained of “loneliness” in his life before he met Sarah Ferguson, according to a royal commentator.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson – affectionately known as Fergie – married in the spectacular 1986 royal wedding. Widely regarded to be a royal love match, the Duke and Duchess of York had a whirlwind romance of only six months before getting engaged. The parents of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have even sparked rumours of a rekindled royal romance, 23 years after their 1996 divorce.

Before Andrew fell head-over-heels for Fergie, however, American actress Koo Stark was widely tipped to become the next Duchess of York.

However, when that romance ended, and before Andrew met Fergie, the Duke admitted to feelings of “loneliness”.

Journalist Sue Arnold, writing in Vanity Fair on the even of the royal wedding in 1986, noted: “Underneath the noise, the clomping shoes, and the big teeth, Andrew has his own bouts with shyness and alienation.

“There was a touching lost-little-boy look about Andrew in his post-Koo, pre-Fergie period.

“He took refuge in unlikely places, such as at the ballet, haunting Covent Garden and staring dreamily at the ballerinas.

“Pining for the unsuitable Miss Stark, he threw himself into his only real hobby – photography.

“He converted a bathroom on the third floor of Buckingham Palace into a darkroom.

“He lives in Prince Charles's old rooms, and scattered everywhere were big blowups of black-and-white pictures that reflected his postcoital tristesse – stark landscapes, bare trees, straggling sheep.

“He would sit on his bed beside the fluffy toy dog that Koo, by then a respectable if disappointed married lady, had given him, wondering how he could improve them to earn plaudits from those other royal snappers Uncle Tony (Lord Snowdon) and cousin Patrick (Lord Lichfield).

“In a TV interview, David Frost asked the prince if there was a theme in his work.

“Prince Andrew thought awhile and replied, 'Dare I say it? The theme, in fact, is loneliness.'"

Prince Andrew released his book, simply titled “Photographs” in 1985.

The Duke and Duchess of York have been holidaying with the Royal Family at Balmoral this year, a habit the they have resumed over the last few years, despite their 1996 divorce.

However, Fergie reportedly had to leave the Scottish estate on Sunday after Prince Philip arrived earlier than expected.

Royal expert James Brookes commented: “They are not known to have the best relationship, and obviously when all the furore around why they divorced and those pictures that came out, that didn’t go down very well.

“Supposedly they can’t be in the same room together.”

He added: “But when we saw those photos of them together at Eugenie’s wedding, we felt maybe that some of that had been put to bed.

“Supposedly that is not the case and Prince Philip has now arrived at Balmoral, earlier than expected, and Sarah has had to leave. A little bit awkward that one."
